Well it’s not actually Wednesday… and I have to say that because the event I’m about to address happened today, Thursday. It was the destruction of Wasteland/The Spot in Oakland. It was one of the largest DIY projects to get the big ugly axe and it just goes to show that the powers that be don’t know what the fuck they are doing. It would be preaching to the choir to list all the reasons that the spot was a benefit to the community, so I’ll just say that we should all be grateful for everyday we get a chance to ride the results of our own hard work, and let’s all shed a collective salty discharge in memory of someone else’s hard work.

Oakland has already been fucked around on their first DIY spot, now Caltrans is trying to bone them out of Wasteland. Sign the petition here (it only takes a minute you lazy bastards) and help keep this concrete alive. More info on Skate Daily.

Bordertown Skatepark

Despite having been around for a number of years, having a website, and having been covering in various news outlets, this place took a bit of searching to find. Therefore I’ll only divulge that it’s under a bridge (in case you couldn’t figure that out). I hadn’t heard about the place in a few years so I didn’t know if it was still in effect but when I saw a girl dropping off a dude carrying a board under a bridge, who promptly scaled the fence leading to a dark expanse, I knew shit was still going down. I followed suit, getting dropped off and jumping the fence. The spot is tucked the fuck away and the dudes riding there weren’t friendly to begin with. I struck up a conversation with one of the guys, who turned out to be the main dude behind the spot and we got along well enough. He is definitely holding this place down… as in, don’t show up here without planning to kick in some loot or some sweat (this goes for all DIY spots!!) Out of respect, I didn’t take any photos and am not posting any more information about the spot… if you wanna ride, put in some work and find the spot on your own. It’s rad and could be gone any day so shred it if you get a chance… but once again, keep in mind that this is NOT YOUR park, it’s THEIRS.

This photo should give an idea of what they’ve had to deal with in the past when fighting the city/state/transit. CHUD life!
