Dead and Gone?

Wow. Only like four months since our last post. We’ve been trying to figure out what to say for a while and then earlier this week one of favorite blogs updated their own site after a long absence and basically nailed what we’ve been trying to say. So in light of our mental roadblock and general malaise, I’ll simply quote from our friend at YouWillSoon.

I’m sure some of you may have noticed that posts have slowed down (sometimes to a seemingly grinding halt) since before Christmas. I guess the truth of the matter is my priorities in life have sort of changed. For one, I finally moved out of my mom’s basement. More importantly though I’ve recently touched my first vagina, so obviously blogging doesn’t seem as important anymore.

Seriously though folks, my priorities have changed, and I don’t find myself as eager to run to the computer and spend time in front of it clicking away on posts as much as I used to. And I find that when I’m not really into making a post, it usually shows. Anyone who’s been reading the blog for a long time knows that when I force myself to post, the posts usually suck. Awhile ago I actually decided I was going to end the blog once 2012 hit. “Go out like Heath rather than Gino” is a conversation me and PL over at BoilTheOcean had. However, as 2011 was winding down, lots of people I talked to convinced me I should keep it going. I also realized that I still enjoy being able to share my thoughts, make dumb little videos, and get feedback from people. Besides, how could I ever bite my tongue off completely withshit like this going on?! I just don’t like it when I feel like it’s an auxiliary job I don’t get paid for. So I guess what I’m saying is I’m still going to be posting, but sometimes it may not happen for awhile. Other times though I’m sure I’ll get inspired and release a flurry of hate for a week or so. Think of me as a manic depressive. It may make it funnier.

Sincere thanks to everyone out there who reads the blog, especially all you guys who have been reading since we started. I know there’s lots of you out there who have been following forever and I really appreciate it. Also to let you guys know, I read every comment and e-mail, I just don’t find time to respond to all of them. Don’t take it personal. Or do, I don’t fucking care.

Hope that rant wasn’t too Berra for you guys.

So yeah, who knows… there will probably be some new posts coming after all.

Bad News and Bohnam for the Holidays

We here at Born Ugly have always been about supporting the small, independently owned shit. There are literally hundreds of upstart companies in the skate world cranking out quality gear with a focus on good art and design along with saying fuck trends, do what comes from yourself. In that spirit I wanted to do a post about two companies that fit those descriptions.

The first is Bad News Boards. We got a package from these guys the other day and I was blown away by the art on the board they sent. It was done by a dude named Jason Spencer and got me real stoked. The guy does some weird, wild shit. They’ve got a pretty strong crew of young rippers (videos on their site for all of them).

The next is Bohnam. They’re an apparel company that Chris at Sevenfold put me on to. Their designs are really solid and nothing about their outdoors style feels forced. The knife looks rad and it’s cheap!

Seriously, if you’re gonna buy some skate shit this holiday season support the little guys! And no that doesn’t include Anti Hero. Sorry, nothing against those dudes or the company (which is rad)… Just saying that even if they still camp out on tour it’s not because they can’t afford to get a hotel. And don’t feel like you gotta listen to me… I’ll guarantee some committed fool in your area is throwing down their life savings to get their own gear made, and they could use your support.

Fucked Up Friday Night: New Belgium Prickly Passion Saison

This is a new selection in the New Belgium Lips of Faith series (basically their occasionally brewed special beers). It’s funny because only a few years ago this would have been written off as a lady drink because it contains fruit. I believe it was Miller that even had advertisements making fun of people for putting fruit (lemons, limes) in their beer, only to do an about face and sell lime flavored beer a few years later. Shitbirds! Well in any case, the general beer drinking population has thankfully grown increasingly more intelligent and open minded, therefore we are all able to enjoy this oddity of a brew. It works well that this is a saison (a style of beer that typically has fruit, spice, or herb characteristics), so the inclusion of seemingly tropical fruits feel right. The flavors are sweet and a hint of sour with a strong ABV (8.5%) that would make your head hurt if the flavors were artificial crap. It only comes in 22oz bombers, which is probably all I would really want to drink at one time. Greg and I both got our own from Travis’s new store, the Hoppy Dog, a few nights ago and you should too!
